National Accolades Received

August 15, 2007

Marietta, the county seat of Washington County, received national recognition recently in three different measures of quality of life.

National Geographic Adventure Magazine named Marietta one of the top outdoor adventure towns in the country.  The magazine picked 50 cities and towns across the country, one in each state. Marietta was the best in Ohio.

"The biggest hamlet in Ohio's Appalachian foothills, bucolic Marietta is set where the winding Ohio meets the Muskingum River," the September issue reports.  "Locals hit the banks for Music on the Levee, a summer-long open-air concert series; in winter the Marietta Brewing Company steps up with live blues and jazz.  Paddlers ply the Little Muskingum along centuries old covered bridges, while mountain bikers take trails in The Wilds, a wildlife conservation park with rhinos, zebras and giraffes." Check out National Geographic Adventure.

Where to Retire Magazine named Marietta one of the eight best Midwestern towns in which to retire in its July/August 2007 edition. The magazine noted Marietta's history as the first permanent settlement in the Northwest Territory and its founding by Revolutionary War veterans. Later it became a center for commerce at the confluence of the Ohio and Muskingum rivers. Marietta is a town "irrevocably tied to a river culture."  The magazine cited the moderate climate, low cost of living and preservation of history as attractive features of Marietta. For more information go to Where to Retire.

Readers of Country Living Magazine in Ohio selected Marietta for the Best Main Street. The magazine called Marietta "one of Ohio's most picturesque communities," the August 2007 edition reported.  "It's charming downtown is worth visiting all by itself.  Explore the many charming boutiques, sample the wares at Rossi Pasta, or have a dinner at the historic Lafayette Hotel."  To read more go to Country Living Magazine.
